Introduction
Owning a dog is a rewarding experience filled with companionship and joy. However, it also comes with responsibilities that extend beyond basic food and shelter. To ensure a happy and healthy life for your furry friend, it’s crucial to understand the daily needs that are often overlooked. Here, we explore seven essential requirements that your dog needs every day but may not always receive.
1. Mental Stimulation
This does NOT mean just a simple walk around the block! Usually as a dog owner we take them for a 30 minute to make a hour walk each day, but an hour later your dog is bouncing off the walls, asking you to play or even barking at you. That is because you only tired out the body and not the mind. So instead of constantly walking, running, place some stimulating toys out (puzzles, snuffle mat, treat balls, hiding treats, etc) this gets the dog to work it's mind and tire themselves out.
2. Let your dog sniff and smell
Incorporating a break during your walks will help control your walks, instead of letting them sniff and smell every step along the way. Sure a dog needs to explore and use their dog senses, however it should be done on your time not theirs. This allows them to understand and listen to you instead of them.
3. Structure
Dogs love structure. They thrive on what comes next. Your dog can not read a clock or calendar. How they learn is through pattern. A particular rhythm throughout the day. Whether it's feeding around the sametime or walking around the sametime, they look forward to the structure. Now, do not have it at the sometime always, break up the structure to different times, but always try and keep the same system. Without structure your pup can get a little chaotic. A dog who is not worried, they can have a stable calm mind.
4. Rest
Dogs need rest. Even though you might be gone for most part of the day during the week, your dog might still feel a little anxious while your away, and/or might seem like they are resting waiting for you to come home, but their mind is still highly anxious without you there. So still give your dog their own space to quiet time, whether it's a crate, a corner with their bed in it. They need a space of their own.
5. Genuine Connection
Just being in the same room as your dog is not enough. Your dog needs that real loving connection with you. 5 minutes of gentle focus attention, a little hands on play and pet. Quiet time that you tuned into them, that way it's a strong bonding connection. Just 5 minutes of no phone, no tv, just pure quilty time with them.
6. A little training everyday
Now it does not mean take an hour or two out of your day to just work on some training skills. Communication with your dog is key. A good 3 minutes a day is good enough. Maybe work on sit and stay before meal time, boundaries before a walk or focusing during a walk. Change your everyday handling with your dog to some kind of training. It's not just about obedience, it's about engaging with your pup and creating a bond with your dog.
7. Safe Outlet
When your don't give an outlet to your dog, that's when they create one, like chewing furniture or digging up your plants. So give them an outlet that is replaceable to the couch or backyard, such as a chew toy, a stick they can chase around, bubble ball pool. Because if you don't give them that urge they crave, they will then take the urge out on things that you don't want them too.
Conclusion
Being a responsible dog owner means recognizing and fulfilling the essential needs of your dog every day. None of these things mentioned cost any money, it is only attention from you, the dog owner. Most likely you have a dog that just doesn't know what to do, and their needs have been unmet. So if you start fixing the issues, you will then see a more calm, happy dog. Which ones are you doing and which ones are you missing?
